Install
Ploten runs on the Windows PC where you use Power BI Desktop. One line in PowerShell installs it, updates it and removes it.
What you need
- Windows 10 or 11, on x64 or ARM. On a Mac: Windows 11 in a virtual machine such as Parallels, with Power BI Desktop and Ploten both inside Windows.
- Power BI Desktop, June 2026 or later, from Microsoft’s Download Center.
- Node.js 22 or later.
- Claude Code or Codex.
- Your report as a Power BI project (PBIP). A .pbix file: save it as a project first.
- Tested with Windows and Power BI Desktop in English. Other languages are not tested yet.
- An administrator, once, for the Power BI setting. If you aren’t one on this PC, IT can set it: see the notes for IT.
- The install line from your Ploten key mail.
Steps
- 1
Close every Claude Code window before you go on.
- 2
On the PC where Power BI Desktop runs, open PowerShell. Paste the install line from your key mail and press Enter. It starts with
npx.cmd -y https://ploten.dev/install --tokenand ends with your licence key, so keep it private. - 3
Ploten asks two questions. Type
yand press Enter for each:- Whether you accept Ploten’s terms.
- Whether you accept Microsoft’s terms for its modeling engine, which Ploten downloads for changes to the data model.
Ploten then tells you that the Power BI setting needs an administrator: do step 4.
- 4
Turn on the Power BI setting as an administrator, once, for every user of this PC. Right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin), then choose Yes (or type an administrator’s password). Paste this line and press Enter:
$k = 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\WebView2\AdditionalBrowserArguments'; if (-not (Test-Path -LiteralPath $k)) { New-Item -Path $k -Force | Out-Null }; New-ItemProperty -LiteralPath $k -Name 'PBIDesktop.exe' -Value '--remote-debugging-port=0' -PropertyType String -Force | Out-NullThen restart Power BI Desktop. If you aren’t an administrator on this PC, give your IT team the notes for IT.
- 5
Restart your agent (close and open Claude Code or Codex).
One install covers every folder on the PC, for Claude Code and Codex. It also lets Claude Code use Ploten’s two tools without asking you each time.
The line starts with npx.cmd, not npx. In PowerShell, plain npx runs a script, and Windows blocks scripts by default.
Update
When a new version is ready, Ploten adds a note to one of your agent’s answers. Run the install line again: it installs the newest version and repairs anything missing. Then restart Power BI Desktop and your agent.
Uninstall
npx.cmd -y https://ploten.dev/install --uninstallThis removes Ploten and frees this PC’s place on your licence key. Your reports and report folders stay as they are. If it can’t free this PC’s place now (for example, with no internet), it keeps the Ploten folder. Run the same line again later, or mail hello@ploten.dev.
What’s installed
npx.cmd -y https://ploten.dev/install --statusShows what’s installed: the Ploten version, your licence key and pass, and whether each agent has its Ploten entry. It changes nothing.
Problem report
If something isn’t working, make a problem report and mail it to hello@ploten.dev:
npx.cmd -y https://ploten.dev/install --reportIt saves a text file in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Ploten\reports and prints the file’s name. The file holds the Ploten versions, Ploten’s own check, whether a licence key and a pass are on this PC (never the key itself), and the last 20 tool calls (tool names, results and times). It holds no names and no data from your reports. Read it before you send it. You can also ask your agent for a Ploten problem report: it gives you this line, or runs it.
On a company PC
The Power BI setting needs an administrator once (step 4). If you aren’t an administrator, or your company manages Power BI or the network, send IT the notes for IT. They say what Ploten installs, the one Power BI setting it changes and how IT can set it, and the addresses it connects to.
